This role offers the chance to shape policy and practice, manage multi‑stakeholder projects, and scale design and planning solutions that expand housing choice.

  • Design and advance middle‑housing development strategies, policy approaches, technological tools and design prototypes.
  • Provide municipalities, community organizations, and developer partners with tools and strategies towards regulatory reform, permitting pathways, and housing delivery.
  • Design and facilitate community engagement processes, including workshops and public consultations, to gather input and feedback on planning initiatives.
  • Prepare clear, persuasive deliverables: policy memos, technical reports, presentations, design visuals, and implementation toolkits and strategies.
  • Oversee and execute technical analyses for policy and land development projects to inform recommendations.
  • Mentor and support planning and development staff, contribute to business development efforts, and represent mddl at conferences, events and public forums.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Degree in urban planning, urban design, or related field; Master’s preferred.
  • 3-5 years of professional planning experience with a demonstrated record of leading municipal or community‑led housing projects, policy work, or regulatory reform.
  • Strong knowledge of land‑use planning, municipal approval processes, zoning reform and land development processes for residential developments.
  • Proven ability to translate technical analysis into actionable policy and design.
  • Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and effectively.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Proven project management and communication skills.

Preferred

  • Experience working on both planning and land development projects.
  • Competency in visual design software and tools (e.g., SketchUp, GIS, Adobe Creative Suite, Figma) for data analysis and visualization is an asset.
  • Familiarity with financial feasibility analysis for housing projects.
  • Experience with leading consultation activities.
  • Proficiency with AI tools and platforms that enhance productivity, streamline workflows, and improve deliverables.
Ways of Working

  • Collaborative, pragmatic, and community‑centered approach.
  • Comfortable with occasional evening or weekend engagement sessions.
  • Approximately 1-5 days travel per month within North America.
  • Hybrid work model with 3 days in-office and 2 days work-from-home per week.
